~kitchen photos finally~

I have updated a few things in our kitchen.
Things I have been wanting to do for a while, but just couldn't find the time.
So, here they are......
First up, I painted these craft store cardboard letters with restoration hardware "slate" paint and put them above the kitchen sink. It was super inexpensive, which is good for me because I seem to have an obsession about changing out this area every few months!
Before I did anything I painted the walls from Ralph Lauren's Roadster White back to Behr's Teepee Brown, which it was originally.
The White was too stark for my taste and it felt "cold"

I also painted all the cabinets to match the island~Ralph Lauren's Oatmeal.

I distressed them with a glaze to give them a little character too.

Then I refinished our hardwoods.
I am telling you, I had no idea how this was going to turn out, but I was more than willing to try it seeing as how it would cost about $400.00 as opposed to $4000.00 to have someone come in and do it for us.
I will say, it was the easiest and smartest thing I could have ever done.
One professional looked at our floors and told us they were beyond repair.
Wish he could see them now!
I used a min wax stain called "Jacobean"
Love them!
What a difference!

I haven't really started decorating for Christmas yet, which is not like me.
This is about the extent of it so far!

Here is a close up of one of the cabinets.
You can see the glaze I used on them.
I didn't even prime.
I had the paint color matched to the new Behr paint that has the primer built in.
I did seal them with leftover floor sealer, and I sanded them first.
{they were originally maple}

Ours floors are pine and previously only had a clear finish, so they were very light.
I love, love, love the darker color!

Another close up of one of the doors.

Most of the dishes in my glass front cabinets came from TJ Maxx, like the 2 pitchers here.

I do love my anthro mugs.

We bought a new pendant light for over our island.
I love the finish on it and it is just the right size.

I love that it has a touch of "bling"

Honestly this is my favorite thing in the kitchen.
It's rusty old metal stool I picked up at a flea market.
I love it because it is used by my little guy when he helps me bake.
I'll be so sad when he doesn't need a stool anymore!

This old wood tote has moved all over the house.
I got it at a flea market as well,
and it currently sits on our island by the stove top
and holds olive oils, salt & pepper, and napkins.
Very handy.

Remember this Pottery Barn shelf?
It now hangs over my desk area in the kitchen.

It holds a ton of stuff and I have found having wrapping supplies nearby is very helpful.

I looked for a long time for an antique kilim rug, but couldn't
ever commit to buying one online.
I am one of those people that likes to see something in person.

I came across this wool rug at Marshall's.
It was not only the perfect size and color, but it was only $59!

I am still loving our chalkboard wall.

So, that's it.
Some new accessories, painted cabinets, and stained floors.
That should tide me over for a while!

If you have any questions about anything I did or something you saw on this post, leave me a comment, I will answer all your questions shortly!
xoxo

your kitchen looks amazing! I wish I had those wood floors in my kitchen. I painted my kitchen cabinets a similar color last year (I used paint and primer in one too), and they still look great

Wow, wow and WOW! It looks gorgeous, and I can't get over how you made it sound so easy! "Oh yeah, I painted my cabinets, glazed them, no biggie. And then refinished the floors." Those are such monumental projects yet you make it look (and sound) as easy as baking a cake. :-) Thanks for sharing!

Insanely gorgeous! Hopefully showing my husband the pictures will convince him to let me paint our maple cabinets. (what is it with men and wood?) The floors are incredible too. Outstanding job. Don't you love when a professional tells you something can't be done or is beyond fixing and then you do it anyway and it is better than expected? The dark floors are sooooo much better! So elegant. Thanks for sharing.

I love your vintage stool - how it's all chippy and worn. Perfect.

We just finished our kitchen and went a similar route with our stools (http://tearinguphouses.blogspot.com/2010/11/before-after-pictures-historic-house-by.html), but I'd love to find a smaller stepping one like yours. So much character.

Your kitchen is amazing! I can't believe all the work you did and how fantastic it turned out! I love white and most of my rooms are painted white but I might have to go get that Teepee Brown.
Well done! Bravo!

I love it! I painted my cabinets and glazed 2 years ago, but yours look so much better! :-) Our hardwoods are honey and we so want dark floors like yours. Great job! Is your kitchen floor the only room you did?

Gorgeous~ everything looks just beautiful! Your cupboards are lovely with the stain applied and the floor... wow!! We refinished our wood floors ourselves too (I'm kind of a remodeling junkie!! ) and stained them a dark, rich color~They were standard 1940's oak- stained and distressed beyond what you would think would ever look good, so I can appreciate your thoughts! Your kitchen is so beautiful and the dark floor looks amazing with your light cupboards. Well done! :)

Amanda said...

Wow! Nicely done! Whenever you get a chance can you give some more details on how you revived your hardwood floors?

It is gorgeous! You did a beautiful job. What a nice, crisp and fresh room it is. The dark floors are lovely with your light cabinets. I like that light fixture. We should have hired you to do our kitchen. You're a pro! You have wonderful taste.

It all looks so nice. Would love more details on the floors. Ours are awful and I've never thought it might be something I could do myself!

Your kitchen looks great! I used the same Behr color in my master bath and I love it. I have been looking for just the right color to paint my kitchen cabinets--I'll have to check out that Ralph Lauren color! I love RL paint and use it alot, but the Behr paint/prime is fantastic!

Your kitchen is gorgeous! I would love to know more of how you did your own floors. Our hardwood floor has some damage in the half bath from kiddos washing their hands (i.e. playing in the sink) and I would love to re-stain them in a darker colors like you and repair our hardwood. Thanks for your wonderful post and blog.

Love it! Especially love seeing the cabinets and floor. These are both items on our to do list. We are in the midst of a renovation and the floor are on the big list but the cabinets are up to me to decide. They are maple and a dear friend suggested paint them to match the watch color to update them a bit. I would love to also add a little glaze so if you feel iike going in to more detail I would love to hear more.

Thanks!

It's SO looks fabulous Melaine! Love the glaze on the cabinets...I am wondering is that what gives it that "distressed look"?? I love dark, dark floors too~ obsessed over them since I saw my friend's sister's gorgeous Lake Washington house ten years ago. I'd never seen dark floors and now I don't think I'd want anything else!!
I still need to coordinate a time with you to come pillow shopping.... ;-)

Great job! The kitchen is just beautiful! I have a sort of strange question for you... Do you use felt pads on the bottom of your bar stools? If so, what kind do you use? I own the same stools and I have tried many different types/brands of pads and none of them stick well enough to the stool to last more than a few days. Any tips you could offer would be much appreciated. Blessings!

Your kitchen looks fabulous! Did you have to use a drum sander before applying the mini wax?

Kitchen looks amazing!!! Love it, didn't think it could look better but it does. I have really worn out wood floors and have been told they are beyond repair. I would love to know when you have time the process of refinishing, because its an idea I have been thinking about for a long time now but have not had the courage to go for it.

sI'm gearing up to do my kitchen cabinets, myself, too, and have been pondering which method to use. I'm overwhelmed before I begin. How difficult was it? Did you take the doors off or leave them on? Can you give me the steps in order that you did?

Also, did you have to rent a sander to sand down your floors before you stained them? I'm trying to decide if I should tackle my kitchen floors, too>

Please do tell how you did your floors! They are wonderful :) I would love a step by step!

Your kitchen is just beautiful. I repainted my cabinets this summer as well. I had done them a few years ago and I thought they were just too yellow so I painted them out in white. Love them. Thanks for sharing all your hard work with us.
