~makeshift mudroom~

A couple years ago we turned our hallway coat closet into something a little more functional for our family.
When you have a small house, every bit of space counts.
I started by taking off the doors.
I then added bead board wainscoting, and painted it white.
I painted the upper portion of the walls tee pee brown
by behr to match the rest of the hallway.
I purchased this and this from Target, both in black.
They are just like these from Pottery Barn, only a lot less expensive.
We use this space now to hold a lot of odds and ends, and also as a place for the kids to get organized with their school work.

Baskets are from Ikea.
I labeled each one using these,
only adding their names on scrapbook paper.
The canvas' of the kids are from here.

Now they have their own baskets for misc. items
I find laying around the house, projects, etc.
They each have their own clipboard too.
This is something new I started this year and it is working out really well.
When they get home from school each day they put their homework, notes home to parents, etc. on their individual clipboards.
I can then sign permission slips, check over papers, and not have paperwork strewn all over the house.

The cushion the bench comes with is practical but not all that pretty.
I found this great fabric at a flea market and wrapped it around the cushions, and added a few of my favorite ruffly pillows.

The center cubby holds my small collection of vintage clocks.

Closeup of the fabrics.
I found this old green chalkboard at the goodwill recently for $4!
Below the bench I have these old crates that in the winter store mittens, hats, flashlights, etc.
In the summer all those things are replaced with baseballs and mitts, tennis balls, sunscreen, sunglasses, and goggles.
It was really hard to get a good shot of this space because it is so small and tucked back in.
The only thing I want to get now is this!
I think it would be cute next to the chalkboard, not to mention practical!
xoxo

Love it, the clipbaord is a good idea, I hate when they are missing papers for school! We are turning a closet into an office right now, hopefully that will help with our paper mess. The clocks are great, they caught my eye right away. I was at Marshalls and TJ Maxx this weekend and couldn't believe how expensive globes are...or maybe I'm just cheap. ;)

Such a cute space. I need to do this with one of my closets. A friend of mine is selling the cutest chalkboard globe that would be so cute in their. Check in out. Thanks for the tips Melanie :)

I love it! Do you have another spot for all you coats and shoes? I'd love to do this too but wondering what I'd do with the mass of stuff that is already in there.

Mel -

You've created a functional "command center" that looks great as well. Was this a double door closet? It seems wider than our minuscule closets.

Your Friend,
Deborah

Hello,

Love it! Love the clipboard idea. We just re did our basement and I have one side where it's a mudroom and craft table. My sons and daughter each have their own space and memoboard. So far it's working. Still working on decorating their space.
I have pictures of the basement on my blog if you want to check it out.
Thank you for sharing. Can't wait till the weather clears up to finish decorating.

I really like that family-sign. Did you make it yourself or did you buy it somewhere?

Really a great transformation of a room, it looks so cozy and nice!

Hi...first time by your blog...so lovely! I'm just starting a second blog...all about design and projects. Pop over some time! I have always had a small desk in the kitchen and it really helps to keep us organized. Our family calender is always above it and everyone has their own color...a quick look and we know who has to be where! lol

What a great idea! Those closets usually accumulate junk anyway. I hope you don't mind if I use that as an idea for my clients. I think many of them would appreciate how functional that closet can become. Thanks for posting. You are so creative! I love your blog and I look forward to your posts.

Nice job, Melaine! Of course, my eye goes straight to your clocks because I collect them too! :)

Love the way you finished the space off with the pillows. So pretty!

Haven't seen that globe at Target. Cute! For $60, though, I think I'd want a vintage one. Etsy?

Very creative, practical and eye-appealing use of space, Melaine! This is something I would definitely try to replicate in my future home...as of now I don't even have an entry way, or a coat closet! My Farmboy has a nice mudroom but it's turned into a puppy room for now, so the shoe bench had to come out (were turning into puppy toys :-)

This is super cute and I love that you showed the more expensive Pottery Barn option that looks the exact same. I do have a question though...where did you get your wainscotting? I want to add that same beadboard look under the bar on the eat in kitchen side of our kitchen but we have 37" up to the granite. Do you have a good source for this white beadboard in a somewhat adjustable size?
thanks!

WOW~!~ That gives me some inspiration for our mudroom/back porch.
It's never how I wanted it and now maybe after seeing this....I can do it.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Thank you for such a great idea- why didn't I think of that?!? (smacking forehead)... Could you give me an idea of the dimensions of your closet, looks quite a bit larger than mine, but definitely could be just the great use of the space.
