~see the similarities?~

Well, I'm back, and it was tough being computer-less!
We got a mac now, so I feel like a school kid having to learn all the new things.
Do you remember when I made this sign?
Look what I just found while browsing the Pottery Barn catalog.
~Holy cow~
What are your thoughts on this?
I guess great minds think alike, ha-ha!

more like great minds checked out your blog and copied you because you are awesome! isn't imitation the highest form of flattery?

I think that's called "reverse knock off." We do them; they do us. The internet is making us all very close neighbors. -- michele

Sarah said...

I completely agree with Cassie and Michele. I've heard of them doing this to other bloggers. It must be sort of strange for you to uncover...I don't know how I'd feel about it.

Kim @ Savvy Southern Style said...

I truly believe that PB and Ballard designs and other companies are scouting the blogs for ideas. Yours looks better.

MrsSouthernBelle said...

They even used the same font! Pb is a total copy cat! They didn't see that at a bed and breakfast like they claimed in the catalog... They saw it on YOUR blog!

Amy of WhisperWood Cottage and Junkologie said...

It's called "someone owes you royalties" or some form of compensation!

Hillcrest Acres said...

Wow, it's almost identical. Now if only you could get a portion of their sales for them.

Dearest Melaine,

Just stumbled upon your blog today and follow as a true 'neighbor from the heart of Georgia'...
By the way, are you listed here as Georgia Blogger? http://asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com/2011/03/updated-georgia-bloggers-list.html

Wish you a steep learning curve for your new Mac and also a Happy Easter Weekend!

Lots of love,

Mariette

I saw it too Melaine and immediately thought of you! You inspired me to make my own after I saw yours....think PB is peeking in your windows?

Wow, that is a complete knock -off of yours! Yikes! I'd be upset about it, if it were me. Enjoy your Mac. Once you get the hang of it, which will be quickly, you'll say to yourself "I should've done this sooner". It is the most intuitive and friendly computer ever.

Kacey said...

I've long suspected PB and others watch blogs...but how odd to discover your own work, just tweaked a bit. I guess you should feel flattered!

Elizabeth (Blue Clear Sky) said...

I guess it could be considered a compliment ;)

Sunshine and Lavender said...

Wow! Now if only PB paid you for your design...

Lisa said...

Melaine that is so crazy! There are definitely people who's job is to look for trends on blogs and present these to big stores like PB. I can't believe how much they copied your design though - down to the font. You are such a trendsetter!!! Pretty cool that YOU are influencing the most popular home store in the US!!!

My jaw is on the floor. Great minds come up with ORIGINAL ideas. Lame minds search decor blogs and COPY ideas. That's just terrible!

Fishtail Cottage said...

pretty amazing how similar they look...hummm? couldn't get any closer to the real thing (yours is the real thing) even the font is the same? you should send them a link to your post...xoox, tracie
ps - so glad your up & blogging again since i just started following you! xoox, tracie

I think you should feel flattered AND get royalties from PB!

It's like teaching - one gathers great ideas from those around them! I'd love to know where you got your stencil to make your sign? I'd like to make a sign that says "Geraniums".
Thanks for inspiring me!

Amanda said...

holy cow! that's hilarious and actually kinda awesome in my book. i wanted that sign so bad... i still do actually. but, i like the one you made better. any chance you'd make another? it's still a blank white wall above my guest bed.

HRH Sarah said...

Humph. I'm a little annoyed that they copied you so blatantly. A lot annoyed. Don't they pay big bucks for their "talent" to create new ideas for their line??? Clearly, someone is overpaid, since all they had to do, was copy what you did for the sheer joy of making the world prettier. On the other hand, the fact that you are so very hip that PB wanted your look is pretty darn cool.

Lori Lucas said...

When I people copy things I make or ideas I have, my dad always tells me that is a high compliment. I NEVER fell for that crap! Ha! It's just pure copying! That's what they did to you as well! Lori L

Christine said...

Blatant copy! They went so far as to copy the fonts.
Yours is better... You win...but they pocket the money!
And that is not fair...like a lot of things in life!

Andrea said...

Yup, there's NO WAY this is coincidence. I'd actually be quite flattered, if I were you =)

So...no joke...the other day I saw that in the PB catalog and thought "I've seen this somewhere before" - but I couldn't recall where I had seen it! I totally remember you posting that a while back! Yours does look better, however...you should be very flattered though!!! : )

"They" say imitation is the highest form of flattery but I think even "they" would feel just as disappointed if the same thing happened to them. I've had the same thing happen to me albeit on a much smaller scale! Even though it's hard try to view it as a compliment - your work is lovely and your blog is too - Jx

absolutely incredible!
It is so obvious that they have copied you. if it was me I know I would feel both flattered- that they copied you and very annoyed - that they haven't asked your permission or acknowledged you in any way!
Not sure how you would go about getting anything out of them though- they are such a big business.

The Yellow Cape Cod said...

Too funny! It would be nice if they gave you some props. You are going to love your Mac. I just made the switch as well and will never go back. Enjoy.

Vintage Barn 27 said...

How flattering! Love the sign, Pottery Barn knows great art when They see it!

Elizabeth H. said...

I think I would be annoyed, actually. Yes, its a compliment, but they also blatantly stole your idea and are profiting from it - and they have not given credit where credit is due, which is wrong.

Personally, I'd contact an attorney and see if you can get royalties or even sue because of it. Its wrong for them to pay their staff to come up with new ideas for their massive corporation when they are just getting them for free from people's blogs. Do you have your blog copyrighted? All you have to do is put (c) anywhere on your blog and you're covered.

I don't think I'd stop at "imitation is the greatest form of flattery"... it would be one thing if other bloggers copied your idea and credited you - its something different when Pottery Barn, a large corporation, is now selling your design and describing it as their own.

maggie said...

Well, we all know people all over blogland copy PB shamelessly but generally it's to make something for their own use.
For a big company to scout the blogs for items to merchandise and then to copy them almost identically is just. not. right.

Melaine...they "are" watching! I have observed some interesting interpretations...but in your case, it's a "dead ringer" of your design! I LOVE watching my blog friends drive the design business.

Best of love and blessings to you and your beautuful family, Happy Easter!

Interesting,I'm not sure how I'd feel about it. I love your sign 100 times more than PB's.

Hi Melaine, Love your blog! It may have not been pottery barn who copied your design, but a SUPPLIER they purchased from, and it may be for sale to other retailers as well????
Wow.... some artists have quit displaying their work on their blogs because it has been copied, identically, and mass produced!!

Anonymous said...

Okay, let me get this straight....we can copy them all we want...and sell what we copied BUT when they copy us...we should get mad and demand royalties. How many times do we forward PB of Ballard Designs (or whoever it is we are copying at that moment) any "royalties" we made from copying them??...exactly, NEVER! Anyone see Susie Harris and her wooden boards she copies PB daily and makes very good money off their copied signs but you dont ever hear her give a disclaimer "a portion of this PB knockoff sale will go back to PB". So they "copied" you...who cares!!!

Meg Day said...

I'm a regular reader of your blog and love your style!

I don't think that great minds think alike, but I do think that PB is smart and they send people out there to follow cool trend setters to inspire new products. I think that call that R&D. Go Sweet Savannah!

I saw it on your blog forever ago and when I saw it on pottery barn I immediately thought of yours.

rhcouch said...

This is no coincidence! This is a huge compliment. I agree with one of your followers. We copy Pottery Barn (and each other) all the time. There is no reason to get angry......this is a "sign" (no pun intended) that you are doing EXACTLY what you should be doing with your life. We missed you by the way.

That's a blatant swipe of your design!

Kel said...

uh...that's exactly your sign....shouldn't royalties be coming your way .:) hahahahaha, LOVE that sign!!! :)

Patty said...

I knew it as soon as I saw it!! Do you get a cut of the sales? Even the same font!
Yours is better!! Are you selling them?

I noticed a copy-cat of an easter basket from another well-read blogger too....

Anonymous said...

That is pretty neat!

However I have to agree with the few people that said its not that big of a deal.

We do copy the pros ALL the time, I do, and have seen many, many other bloggers who have done the same thing, and yes turn around and sell them too.

So it really is ok. Just be excited this doesn't happen every day.

Alyssa said...

Wow, that is crazy! I'm thinking a designer over at PB is following your blog. ;)

Virginia said...

Last summer I made some pillow covers with stencils and iron-ons that I designed myself. I didn't put them on my blog, but lo and behold, PB had nearly the exact same thing in their spring collection. So Weird!

RUDE! I would be uhhhh p*ssed off! Yours looks better! Sucks they are making big bucks off your idea, you should get a cut. It reminds me of a "friend" who coppied my candle/soap business right down to the packaging... Maybe I am just bitter, but I would be upset. Although people told me the imitation is the highest form of flattery crap too.

If I said it once I've said it a hundred times...PB stalks the blogs for ideas!!

At the gift shows vendors have signs that say no photographs, especially Pottery Barn. They are known in the industry to be "knock off" experts so that they can mass produce overseas at a reduced cost and make maja $$. Maybe not so ethical, but good business. I agree with everyone else - I like yours much better!

I think they totally watch great blogs and get ideas...that's what I think...

it looks freakishly similar to yours.

imitation is the highest form of flattery. :)

Hi
If you haven't copied it, you better copy right it...then they can't steal it..you could be getting royalties!

My take on this is that at least when someone does a PB knock off, it's clearly touted as a "PB" knock off. Credit for the original goes where it belongs. Yes, I would be flattered, but I think the least I'd expect is credit for the design. Whether someone wants to lawyer up and take it further is up to them. I don't know whether I would or not to be honest.

I've thought for a long time now that the blogging world is influencing design and home decor retailers much more than the other way around as was the case in the past. I have wondered what PB think when they see so many knock-offs so much cheaper around. Maybe they figure it works both ways. But we are talking about the difference between a massive company and an individual.

Yes, it is very flattering. I'm not sure how I'd feel if it were me.
