~ship shape~

I love it when I have great success at thrift stores.
Today was one of those days.
I scored not only 1, but 2 things I am super excited about!
The first one is this painting on canvas.
Check out all the detail.
I love the colors and  I love the subject matter.
 The back reads:
Clipper ship
"flying cloud"
rounding Cape Horn.
If anyone knows anything about this piece, I'd love to hear.
It is signed W. Harris.
I also found this large heavy vintage lamp. I don't know if it is alabaster or marble, but I love it and I have the perfect spot for it as well!
What do you think of my Tuesday finds?
You still have 2 more days to enter the dreamy whites giveaway.

You made some great finds. I love ship paintings and have 4. There is something so soothing about ship paintings for summer. I beleive your lamp is alabaster. I have one almost identical to that one.

I think I need better thrift stores! Never find a thing. I too have the perfect spot for your lamp, just in case it doesn't work out in your home! :)

I love your lamp-I have one that is very similar! I was wondering where you go thrifting? I live in Sammamish, but don't seem to have as much luck as you do. Thanks!

I'm drooling over that lamp! I don't think I'd want to put a shade over it. I'd probably remove the lamp components an hang a necklace or two on it in my closet.

That lamp is gorgeous! I have one that looks very much like it and it's alabaster. What great finds! The painting is very pretty, too. Peaceful colors.

I am green with envy! We somewhat "collect" ship pictures and that one is amazing. AND, I've been searching for such a lamp for months and only find ones for $50 or more! Great finds!!

I just found one a lot like that this past weekend and was SO excited too!! How are you displaying it in your house? I really want to do like Pottery Barn style mixed in with a lot of family photos in all different frames close together in a fun, but kind of messy jumbly wall, but I'm not sure how it'll look with photos around it...? If you try that, I'd like to see pictures :)

I looked up W. Harris in Davenport's and there are 9 listed artists with first names that start with W. The one that comes closest to what you have and may or may not be the artist is William Edward Harris 1860-1930. He painted landscapes, rivers, farms, streets, fisherman, children, churches, ships and animals. His paintings have auctioned for $1150 to $7750 for approximately 30 x 20 size. This Davenports is from 2000. You might want to research the painting on askart.com.

I found a William Laurel Harris (1870 - 1924) that I think may be your artist. Also, I found this about the "Flying Cloud".......
In May 1851 the eyes of the world were fixed on the Flying Cloud, the largest merchant ship afloat at the time. On her first trip from New York to California arrived just after 89 days and 21 hours. This record has never been surpassed by any sailing ship and only twice equalled, once by the Flying Cloud herself.

I am really happy about you finding the oil painting, and I feel certain that it is a treasure.
