~do you hear that?~

First off, let me say thanks to all who left comments yesterday.
I read every single one,
yes, every one.
Wait, do you hear that?
That's right~no music!
The majority of you all agreed and the music is now gone.

I will warn you though, I probably will play Christmas music at the holidays because it is my favorite.
And I may start it the day after Halloween.......
just warning you in advance :)

 With that being said,
I have updated my etsy shop
{link at the top of this page}
with a lot of new goodies.
These are some of my favorite things that I haven't wanted to personally part with,
but my house is full, and things must go.

I hope you are having a wonderful Friday!
xoxo

It makes me sad that one person, being mean because she had a bad morning and decided to be rude to someone about their choice of having music on their blog...made you change who You are! I get you then asked for people's opinions and took their opinions to heart. But, in reality, the original mean girl who started the whole thing Won! Sad we have to feel we need to make others happy in order to keep people coming back and leaving a comment! I enjoy your blog either way....but really, if you really want music what some people think, shouldn't change who you are! Just saying!

Thank you Lisa, so sweet of you. I would like to say though that I didn't do this because of her comment. Yes, it prompted me to ask and I did take it off because the majority said they mute it anyway, but I am ok with no music too. I think her comment could have been worded differently though, there is no need to be rude. I don't feel like she won, I feel like we are all winning :)And like I said, come Christmas, the tunes are back on for the season! I appreciate yours, and everyone else's comments! xoxo

I completely agree with "A cottage to me" As I had said before this blog is a reflection of you and the music is part of that. It always seemed to give me that better sense of you. It's really a shame that her bad day turns into this entire outcome. I could be wrong but aren't blogs supposed to be about "you"? When I stubbled upon your blog I feel in love with it's entirety. of coarse the name drew me right in because my daughter is also name Savannah. But sometimes I wonder f people remember that there are much bigger things in life to worry about....was it really that big of a deal to mute the computer! Well I will read your blog no matter what, I just wish some people could see the bigger picture beyond themselves,,,,,,

thanks Jessica, I couldn't agree more! It's funny that something as simple as music could turn into such a big controversy! I was ok with it either way though, so I would like it to be known that I am not changing for others and their opinions. I am simply trying to make everyone happy. :) Thanks for your comment! xoxo, Melaine

I would never tell someone how to run their blog, but I did have to turn my sound off everytime I checked your blog. The music did not in any way stop me from checking in. I love your blog and I think if you like the music you should keep it. I struggle with trying to please everyone, but I'm getting to the age where I just don't want to do it anymore!!! If people don't like it . . . too bad!
Anyway, I love your blog with or without the music.

Hi Melaine, I am going to miss your music, I always loved clicking on your blog, if I was having a rough day it was a joy to visit. I am sorry that you have turned it off. Will miss it. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Terri

I appreciate you and your blog!

Hi Melanie,
Just wanted you to know that your blog is the reason I got playlist myself. I'm glad you had the music, or I might never have registered for playlist. (Also, I picked some of the same songs as you because I like them so much) Thanks!

Hi Melaine, I do not feel like the original poster won in any way...if that were true you would have just removed the music without asking your readers opinion. I don't believe it made you change who you are, instead it really shows the type of caring and considerate person you really are. Choosing to remove the music says to me that you truly value your readers and decided to go with the majority. Just like in any vote unfortunately this will not please everyone but will please the majority. I know it will please those with dial-up that had a hard time loading your page and were not able to easily visit. You really are a sweet person and I love your blog....I read it every day. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Can't wait to see Cody's room! Jeni

Hi Melaine ~ I love your blog with or without music. Yours is one of the first blogs that I found and loved when I first discovered blogland. Your home is so beautiful and inspiring that I had to come back time and time again. Thank you so much for all that you have shared with us!!

UpstateNYCrew said...

When you read a blog, it's because you appreciate what the person has to offer to us, including the sharing of music. It is through sharing what you love that you introduce new ideas, new music to other people. It is very sad indeed that we now live in a society where others have to change what they love to cater to what we like. If you don't like the music, lower the volume or mute it, that's what the button is there for.

Thanks for asking for our opinion!
Blessings to you :0)

It was constructive criticism. It was actually phrased pretty nicely considering how a lot of people feel about auto-play music. Seriously, it's one of the biggest pet peeves people have for a website.

Perhaps more people will be attracted to the blog now that they aren't immediately having to close the window. And they'll no longer miss out on all the great content here! That's an upside if I've ever heard one.

I didn't leave a comment yesterday, as I was fine with whatever your decision was.
I just wanted to let you know that I love your blog!!! You have a beautiful home, and I love your decorating ideas.

Emom said...

interestingly, this is the first I have heard about this music controversy on your blog....but, my experience was this; I used music on my blog a few years ago, it was music I loved....but it was distracting to people who had come to my blog to read. My mother, a retired librarian confirmed that some people simply cannot read with background music. So, I stopped the music.....my readership increased....coincidence? I don't know?.....I love your blog....and your Etsy site.

Hi Melaine,
I actually loved your music because you had many songs that I adored!
When I visit people's blogs, I'm not always in the mood for music, and when I'm not, I just mute the sound on my computer.
I would never say something hurtful about it though. This is your blog and your place to express your talents and passions, who's to say you have to change?
Hope you have a beautiful weekend.
Sincerely,
Melinda

I just wanted to say that I just painted my kitchen with your blog music playing in the background....I just left it on and let it replay because I loved the selections at the time. I think I'll actually miss hearing it as I cruise through your blog with my morning coffee.

I have never understood the need for people to leave unkind or unflattering comments on blogs. If you are not pleased with what you see or hear you simply make a decision about what to do going forward....there is never a good reason to ruin someone else's day.
Love the blog and hope nothing disuades you....

Greetings from the brocantes of France!

I'm not a fan of music on blogs that aren't about music.

However, you like it and a some of your readers do. I would suggest putting it back up but not on "autoplay". That way anyone wishing to hear the music could just click on play to turn it on. (I'd put it at the top of your site to make it easy to turn on.) That way everyone would be happy.

When I came to your blog today and saw your heading it made me think of the Simon and Garfunkel song, "The Sound of Silence."
Love your blog either way!

I agree with Lisa at Cottage to me. I didnt respond, because it never occurred to me that those no votes would win. Loved the music, often had it playing just because. So sorry the squeaky wheel won. Hope that you will have music sometimes other than christmas. Thanks,
shannon

I missed the controversy and I am sorry if feelings were hurt. I love music and I enjoy finding new songs or artists. Check out, American Routes on line, it is a wonderful site and I have been turned onto some great new/old musicians.
I'm writing because I don't know if anyone has written this reason for NOT liking music on a site. I can't tell you how often, I have been going from blog to blog, reading, opened up a blog and being startled, when music begins playing. I'm a night owl, so hearing something unexpected, is sometimes frightening. I mute music and that's my choice. I gather you're O.K. with your choice and thanks for asking your readers. I always try to remember what Thumber's mom told him about saying something nice or keeping quiet.

Oh...and I love the basket in the top pic, which is what I was curious about...what a nuckle head! Isn't that a great word?

I really appreciate how you handled this.

I didn't get to comment because, frankly, I'm one who moved to reading your blog only through an RSS feed/reader because of the music. I can only go to so many direct sites in a day on two 15 minute breaks at work so sites that had music were a no go. Because I read via a reader, I missed out on commenting on a lot of your great posts and, mostly, I missed out on visiting your lovely etsy shop because the RSS feed didn't lend itself to clicking through to the shop after your awesome "new to the shop" posts.

All to say, each person will do what they need to do to most enjoy your blog. I loved your writing and shop posts enough to continue to read in a reader. The downfall to that, for me is that I have hundreds of blogs in my reader so at best, I get to each one maybe once a week. Without music, I can re-add your blog to the short list of blogs I read daily on break. I'm looking forward to being more engaged here.

Got to tell ya - I miss the music. Is the blanket there an airline blanket - reminds me of my United blanket when I fly.

Angie Gren said...

Hi Melaine, I missed the controversy! I love the idea of having the music available to be "clicked" on for those that love the music. Either way, I love your blog with or without it. :)

SusieQ said...

If you want music on your blog, you should go for it. After all it is your blog, your design. I do mute my computer, but that is more out of courtsey to others. And anyone is able to do the same. So if music on your blog, makes you happy--GO FOR IT.

Dee said...

Yay! Happy to have the music gone. Have been startled too many times when I forgot I'd turned my mute off. Also makes it difficult to sneak in a peek when I'm supposed to be working. My husband knows immediately I'm not in quickbooks. Will look forward to the Christmas music though, in the spirit of the season~!

Rita May said...

It's the readers choice to turn off or turn down the music. You aren't forcing anyone to listen and I love the mood it gives to everyones blog.

But what I don't like is word verification. It takes too long and sometimes I've exited a blog before it pops up and my comments are lost. I don't think it is necessary
anymore. It's a deterrent to comments.

Lynn said...

I understand your choice, but it seems so quiet. Hope you're having a good weekend!

That is so lame. I mean, I don't like all music I hear on blogs but are people really too lazy that they can't push one button on the keyboard? They have to complain and ruin it for the rest of us. I say you can have the music on if you want, if it makes you happy. To everyone else, if you're at work and get in trouble because a blog blares music all of a sudden... get smart and turn the volume off first or get back to work. If my kids are sleeping and I'm looking at blogs with music I always turn it off first. A monkey could be trained to do that. I loved hearing your music. It always made me feel like rearranging something.

Hi Melaine,

I disagree with A Cottage To Me. Turning the music off doesn't mean the other person won or you are changing who you are. It just shows that you are a considerate person and you CARE about your readers. You found a solution to a problem. That's what matters! People kill me when they say "It's my blog and I can do what I want". To me that reads SELFISH! I'm so glad you at least considered the opinions of all of us. Even though the reader was rude, I THANK YOU for rising above that and asking what we would like. Yes, you didn't have to because it IS your blog, but I so apprecaiate that you cared enough to work out a win win situation for us all. The world needs more people like you. If we can't be considerate of the small things how can we expect to deal with the big things.

I love your music and I hate that I didnt get a chance to vote before you took it off. I turn it on even when Im not in the office and it blares through my house like a sweet little pick me up. It is never complained about and I have 12 people living with me right now. If that puts the music lovers in the majority I say back on it goes!!! love everything baout your blog!

Dear Melanie

I just came back to your site to listen to your music - especially the first song you had on, which I LOVED and it was gone :( I am sad there is no more music and have been searching and searching to find your play list because I wanted to download some of those songs. Would you mind sharing it with me. If nothing else, just that first song that I fell in love with. Thanks so much.

I totally start listening to Christmas music the day after Halloween too! Actually sometimes even before Halloween I'm not gonna lie.

I am so happy you turned the music off. I haven't visited your blog in a while mostly because the music would startle me. I actually reminded myself to expect the music as I clicked onto your blog tonight. I was pleasantly surprised by the silence.
Thanks.

I am one who mutes the music. I am not sure that having music on your blog can be construed as a part of your identity? This entire blog emanates your personality and as I said, considering I muted the music, I still got a great feel for who you are. I once read that if you want to increase readers to your blog, don't put music on it. So my prayer for you is that after making this decision, your reader base increases tenfold, and that "mean girl?" Well, she really loses in the end! Sending you love!
