Here in the pacific northwest we have a ton of rhododendron bushes.
{I love using cut stems for an informal display of color!}
We have them surrounding our house in gorgeous shades of purples and pinks, whites, and reds.
These are some pictures of rhododendrons we have on our property.
This is the time of year when they are in full bloom and the bumble bees are very happy!
Pennington fertilizer has been a big part in the success of our rhododendrons.
You can find it at most home improvement centers.
It's not only good for this type of plant, but a wide variety.
1. Why is fertilizing an important step of
landscape management?
Fertilization
is an essential step in landscape maintenance and plant development, helping
establish and sustain strong growth patterns. A fertilizer helps to supply the
essential nutrients that plants need for healthy growth. Proper nutrition
assures optimum plant growth and resistance to diseases, insects and
environmental problems. Fertilizers, however, differ in nutrient content and
release duration. Fertilizer selection should be based on the types of plants
being fertilized, the nutrient content of the soil and the type of growth
response desired.
2. Are there particular times to fertilize based
on region?
Traditionally,
where non-slow release fertilizers are being used, plants in the Southern
regions tend to require fertilizing four times a year – in the spring, early
summer, late summer and fall. This is due to the long growing season. In the
Northern regions, there tend to be two growing periods. The first is after the
garden’s return from winter dormancy. The second is during the early fall when
temperatures moderate and extreme heat spikes are over.
3. What fertilizer should be used for each type
of plant?
Pennington® Smart 1 Feed™
consists of a complete line of long-lasting, specialty premium fertilizers
designed for efficient feeding, proper nutrition and healthy plant growth. The
line features mix variations that have been customized for various growing
environments, plant types and application needs, taking the guesswork out of
mix selection. There are five mix variations, including: All-Purpose; Azalea,
Camellia, Rhododendron (ACR); Bulb &
Bloom; Citrus & Avocado; and Rose
& Flower.
Central Garden & Pet partnered with bloggers such as me to help educate us all about their Pennington Smart 1 Feed® products. As part of this program, I received compensation. They did not tell me what to purchase or what to say about the use of the products. Central Garden & Pet believes that consumers and bloggers are free to form their own opinions and share them in their own words. I don't have rhododendrons & azalea's here but I do love my roses and am always buying rose food for my lovelies!
Perfect timing for this post! We spent some of the holiday week-end spring cleaning the yard and planting several new knock-off roses. I love these roses and mentioned to my husband we need to find a fertilizer to keep them looking as good as the day they were planted. It looks like Pennington might be the answer. Thanks for sharing. Jen

Really, that is what every one says. Couldn't do w/o fertilizer. Your blog takes me back to the beautiful Pacific NW. It's always a special treat to read your blog. [email protected]

Wow! Your Rhododendrons are gorgeous. We've been having bad luck with ours and we're replacing plants every 2 years. I think the Mr. is not giving them the right fertilizer, or we don't have them in the "right" spot in our gardens. This is the only plant we have trouble with. Maybe we need some of that Pennington's. . .
We are moving to my grandmother's house next month and we need to do some landscaping! $50 would be put to good use! Love your blog!

Beautiful flowers and lots of great information. Thanks.
Sign me up. I'm always at Home Depot for one thing or another.
Love your blog, love your style!! crossing my fingers for $50!!
I love your blog and your decorating style! I always have a project in the works so a gift card would be FAB!
We had a rhododendron at our childhood home that was easily 10 feet wide- HUGE!!!! It did not survive a recent hurricane (too many broken branches..) The replacement lacks the "magic" of the original bush. I doubt my mom will still own the house 30 years from now so I wont get to see the new plant at maturity. :( GReat giveaway, strange comment on my part...weird how just a photo of rhododendrons got me rambling.
[email protected]
I'll be moving into a new home soon and a H.D. card would be so appreciated.
Hi Melanie...
Oooh...your rhododendrons are gorgeous! They sure do make a beautiful bouquet. I have never tried to grow them...not sure how they do in my area.

I could use that card to plant some more flowers. Please enter me in your generous giveaway.

I am so inconsistent with fertilizing - fortunately, my plants are pretty forgiving. I just wonder how much more they would bloom if I fed them better. Love your blooms!
Well that won't be hard to spend if I'm the winner. Thanks for the chance!
