~update, and I'm almost ready to come back~

Thank you for being so patient with me. I feel like my days have been running in slow motion. To some of you, a dog is a dog, but to me, my dogs are like my kids~truly.
Many of you have asked how we lost him, so I thought I'd quick share. As many of you know we live on a lake. What you might not know is that our backyard backs up to 800 acres of forest. There are bike trails, hiking trails, our community tree farm, and well, just plain forest. Harley and his BFF Bosco go for many bike rides with Boscos owner back in those woods. They run freely along side him for 2, sometimes 8 miles, then they come home. Well, on Sunday the 4th, Harley and Bosco must have heard something and ran off. Bosco's owner called them and Bosco came back but not Harley. He turned around and looked and called, but when he didn't return he went on his way. He wasn't very far in the trails and Harley has ran off before and always made his way home.

So, that was Sunday night. I have been searching everyday for at least 6 hours in my car and by foot. Every time I get a sighting I hop in my car with water, treats, dog food, and sometimes Bosco. Every time I hit a dead end. However, I feel that he is out there. The tips I am getting really sound like him, but they all say he is scared and won't come to them, then he runs off. It's hard not to get discouraged, but I am staying hopeful on stories I read about dogs returning home after 3 weeks, etc. I have met some wonderful people, complete strangers that have offered to help put signs up {I now have about 250 up} given me tips and sightings, or just a big hug. Your comments here and on instagram are so sweet. You all care so much about a dog you've never met and the prayers have helped me get through this. If I type anymore I will be a blubbering mess, so I am just going to leave you with a photo of my sweet baby and let you all know I will be returning back to blogging on Thursday with a thrifty thursday project. I might not talk about Harley, but trust me, you WILL know when we get him back. I think whatever part of the country you are in, you will hear me screaming for joy.

xoxo

My heart really goes out to you Melaine. I do believe I know exactly how you feel. My cat Sam, came back after being gone for ten days . . . seemed like forever. He wandered off on an unauthorized vacation! Turns out someone in the neighbourhood took him in thinking he was lost. All I can say is that it was the most absolutely AMAZING feeling when he returned home safe and sound. I hope in my heart you experience that same feeling with Harley.

I understand. I love my dogs and would be devastated if I were in your position. I have been praying you'll find him and if I lived close I would be out helping you find him!! :)

I totally understand. My dog is like my first born. He has never got out, but if he did, he would certainly get lost. My neighbor's lab took off one day after a rabbit and came back 10 days later. He was dirty and hungry, but otherwise, no worse for the wear. I'm sure he's on his way back or just waiting for you to find him. Dog's have a lot of great natural instincts, remember that. Prayers to yoU!

awww Melaine - was so hoping your next post would say that Harley ended his mini-vacation and trotted back through the door! Understand completely your feelings for him (and all animals). You are right to believe in the thought that he will be found - even weeks from now!

Sharon said...

I'm sure you probably thought about this already...but call the shelters. We had a dog gone for 2 weeks once...a friend asked if I had called the shelters...I had not...so I did...he was there...and the funny thing was...he had been gone for 2 weeks...but he had just been brought in the day before I called. You just never know...call and leave your name and number with them.

Wish I lived closer. I'd be right out there with you looking. I too would be devasted if anything happened to ours or they went missing for any length of time. We lost our cocker spaniel once years ago...she got out with our other dog, he came back but she did not. It was cold, damp and icy. We looked everywhere. She did turn up days later, having survived very cold wet nights...she had hunkered down underneath a neighbor's porch not a mile from home to get out of the elements and because she was frightened. All that to say...you will find him!!

Everytime I read your posts about Harley my eyes tear up and I feel the sadness you must have in your heart. I can't wait until you post that you've found him. I'm sure he's trying to find his way home and has just gotten turned around. Our old lab wandered off a year ago and we searched all over. I live near some busy roads and was so worried he was hit by a car or something because he's old and has bad knees. Turned out he was picked up by the local police and had to spend the weekend in doggie jail (he was picked up on a Friday night and we couldn't get him back until Monday morning). Ifelt so guilty because he didn't even have his collar on. My felon came back home but none the wiser, he still wanders away if he gets out of the yard. I am praying for Harley's return very soon!

Melaine, I know exactly how you feel. Each dog we have/had, he is truly a family member! We wouldn't have it any other way. If a dog is just a dog, then why have it? Dogs just want to be with their human family....prayers for your Harley boy. Please keep us updated.....he's scared because you aren't with him. But he will make it home to you!

I know exactly what you mean. We only had our dog for a few weeks when we lost her. It was a very long four days until we found her. But if I ever lost my "boy" that I've had for eight years, I wouldn't know how to function. I'm sure you'll be reunited with Harley very soon:)

Oh Honey I feel your pain so very much, I didn't read the other posts but I'm sure most are from owners who have lost their pets. My story is no different..3yrs ago my 3 Boxers broke through our wood privacy fence, we found 2 of them together out in the field behind our house but not my Nikki Girl. I can't understand it as they are always together when they manage to sneak out but she was nowhere to be found. I got ahold of 'lost dogs of Texas" (I'm sure wherever you are located, have the same but with your state). These are great people who work with you for fryers ect of your dog & it is completely FREE..They even help you make up flyers for your lost furbaby

jo said...

I know exactly how you feel. A dog is not just a dog. They are often the love of our lives. There is no purer love on this earth than what we get from our dogs. I pray you find him eventually and that all will be well. Stay strong.

Keep strong, he will come home.

I never feel comfortable calling my fur babies "pets". They are my kids, so I feel heart sick for you.
I lost a dog once for five days and a cat for eight days. Those days until you have them back at home are horrible! Keep looking and calling constantly. On the day I finally found my cat, I got up and started calling very early before all the birds woke up. It was very quiet. My cat heard me and started answering back!! Seems to have made a difference not having all the day time noises.
My thoughts are with you!

My dogs are my babies so I completely understand! Have you tried contacting a tracker? There are people with dogs that are trained to track down lost pets. They're really successful in a lot of instances.

A friend of mine found her dog after he was lost for 2.5 weeks, so don't give up hope!!

Melaine,
Hopes & prayers for the haste return of your precious boy, Harley. Having read the circumstances of his going astray, has eased my concern for his safe return...I so take pet issues to heart; so have prayed for & thought of Harley, you & your family over the last few days. The impact of these sweet souls in fur coats on our human condition is so often immeasurable.

Oh how we all feel your pain. you may want to expand your search to areas the dog has visited or other places you have lived...twice over the years we have lost dogs only to find them literally 30 or 40 miles away at an old house we lived in. Good luck!

A former co-worker of mine has a pet tracking business. She may have some tips for you. I know she often has owners go out and leave scent markings so that the dog can follow his nose home. She has a team of dogs she uses for tracking. Her FB name is Lost Pet Tracking Dogs. Call her. Good luck.

Today is the first time I am visiting your blog and your story hits close to home. A few years ago we were in Fl visiting my mom and we brought our labradoodle along. Wee left her with my aunt down the road so we could go visit my grandmother for one night. Well, that silly dog ran off and we could not find her anywhere. A few days latee we had to go back home to Ga and we were devastated. My aunt and mom continued looking for her and putting up signs. Two months later she was sighted along the edge of a huge swamp. My aunt trudged back in there and finally found her. I thank God it was winter time, because if it had beenwarmer I am sure the alligators would havegotten her. Kepp hoping and praying.
