~I believe in miracles~

August 4, 2013 our sweet Harley didn't come home after being out with the neighbors.
{original story here.}
You were all so sweet and prayed with me, and sent me encouraging emails,
some of you even helped search for him with me.
I could not wrap my head around him being gone.
We were all heartbroken.
I remember searching for days, weeks, and then months.
Our local paper ran a story on Harley.
I plastered the city with literally hundreds of fliers.
I got leads, but nothing solid.
But, I never gave up.
The photo below was taken on Sunday night right after we were reunited, almost 9 months later.
He was scared, full of fleas, and very skinny, and here is how it all happened……
I was working on our kitchen for the One Room Challenge with my husband and got a text from number I didn't recognize.
It simply said,
"Is Harley still missing?"

I immediately responded with a YES and asked if they had a lead.

Over the months I have got so many texts with false leads that
I learned to not get my hopes up too much, so at this point, I wasn't too hopeful.

A few minutes later he responded and said he bought a dog a while back from an abusive owner. Someone had come up to him a few days prior and told him our story and said the dog looked like Harley, so he looked us up.

His next text was one he must have repeated 100 times,
"Would you still be able to issue a reward?"

I asked him to send me a photo which he did.
I honestly didn't think it was Harley and told him he had the wrong person, to which he responded,

"I don't think that picture necessarily shows his looks well. He looks exactly like your photos online, and has a black spot on his tongue….."

So I asked him to take him to a vet and have his microchip scanned, which he promptly did.
{in the meanwhile still asking about reward $}

The next text I got from him was saying he was at the vet and they were scanning the dog and would be calling his owner.

I stared at my phone with the rest of the family, and nothing.
A minute passed and still nothing.

I texted him back and told him it must not be us because I wasn't getting a call from the vet.
He told me she had to take another call and was calling the owner now.

My phone rang.

I had chills. The woman on the phone asked if I was Melaine and if I had a microchip number to compare to the one she scanned.

Yes, go ahead.

As she read the numbers one by one I felt like I was going to pass out.
She read the last number and I lost it.

I couldn't breathe.
I was hysterical, happy, shocked, and I felt like throwing up.
The numbers all matched.
I felt like I had just been read the winning lotto numbers.

My family could tell from my reaction that it was him and now the whole family was in tears.

I asked the vet to hold him and told her that we were on our way.
Unfortunately the guy still had Harley in his possession and he did not want to stay and fled.

Thank goodness she grabbed his license number and a description of him.

I called 911.

I explained that this guy had my dog and how do I get him back…..
I gave them the info I had from the vet and they had a name and address in a matter of seconds.

After hanging up with the police, my phone rang.
It was the guy.

I answered and so began the saga of the reward money.
He told me now that I knew it was my dog, would I have the $1000.00?
I asked him if $500 sounded fair and he said no. That when I had the $1000, I would see my dog.

Back to 911.

They offered to go to the guys house and get my dog, or, they said I could go meet him and pay, or not pay him the money. For some reason the encouraged me to go meet him, not alone of course.

I texted him back and told him I had the money and would meet him. This was 2 hours after the first text came in. He chose a parking lot in a business area in a nearby town in front of a Subway restaurant. We were to meet there in one hour.

We left the kids home and brought plenty of backup with us.
We all arrived before him and waited.
Part of me wondered if he would show.
But he was money hungry.

Finally, a car pulled in matching the description of the one the vet gave me.
I ran over and when he opened his door to get out, a skinny Harley jumped out and attacked me, knocking me to the ground and licking my face!

More happy tears!
I immediately put him in my car and waited while the guys talked to this guy.

He changed his story several times.
One version was that he had purchased the dog off craigslist in September.

One story was that he rescued it from a abusive owner.

Another was that he got him from a friend.

Nothing added up, but Harley was in my car!

My husband ended up giving him $700 and told him he could have the other $300 if he could tell us where he purchased him from, if that was the case.

All of a sudden we were driving away…..
with Harley.
I sat in the back seat with him and loved on him like there was no tomorrow.

Like I said, he was skinny, full of fleas, and was given a new name.
I so wish he could talk and tell me his story.
I pray he was treated well. That he didn't have to sleep outside on the cold winter nights.

We brought him home to happy tearful kids and immediately bathed him.
{the black and white photo above}

He remembered Hunter and was not so excited to see we had a new addition.
{they are adjusting now}

I had some prescription flea medicine so I gave him that. He wouldn't eat for us but did respond to his name. He sniffed around the house and peed on the dining room chair.

I wasn't sure if he was marking his territory or if the guy had let him go to the bathroom in the house?!

Luckily, I think it was just him marking his territory, as he hasn't done it since.

We are all adjusting to having 3 big dogs.
I have to say though, our family feels complete.
It is so nice having him home and I can finally stop worrying about where he might be.
We are getting an invisible fence installed next week, but for now, he goes out on leash only.

It's amazing that after almost 9 months how fast he is settling back in.
He knows us.
He responds to his name.
He is eating again.
He has been checked out by the vet, and other than the fleas, which are now under control, he luckily is very healthy.

I feel blessed, thank you for all your comments on instagram and Facebook. All your emails and to all the people that helped search for him.
I truly think this is a miracle that he is home, safe, happy, and healthy.
Right where he belongs.

xoxo

Melanie,
What an incredible story. Tears of joy... my goodness. It sounds like a lifetime movie. Praying that the horrible guy that reunited you with Harley someday realizes his actions.
The amazing thing is, you've got your Harley back.
Blessings to your big, happy family!

I think it's so wonderful and heart warming that you have your wonderful pup back! I do however have a few choice words for the person that had Harley! What kind of a person blackmails a family when they are so clearly devastated by the loss of the family pet!? Oh boy, I sure wish the police would have investigated this person a little further. I know that you have him back and really that's what is important, people like that burn my butt though, the nerve... I'm sad that he was away from you for 10 seconds! I am so happy he is home now where he is clearly loved and adored!

Melaine I bawled throughout this entire story! I lost my cat for 30 days, and when he was returned to me I thought I would die of happiness. I cannot imagine 9 long months. The guy who brought him to you sounds super sketchy..but the important thing is that you found him and he is home and healthy!

Once again congratulations!

Oh my goodness, so happy for you!! My dog was only lost for 5 nights and I thought the world would end - Even though I was pregnant with our first boy, I didn't see how I could ever be happy again. We stayed home from a standing family dinner because I wanted to wait for the phone...it rang! We found our beloved Doc limping on the main highway, full of ticks and smelling to high heaven, disoriented and in shock. We picked her up and headed home, her tail wagged as she saw the house...the rest is history! I still feel like it Was a Miracle!!

This is the best news ever!!!My prayers never stopped for this miracle to happen. In fact I was just thinking of Harley over the weekend. Which I suppose seems silly since I live on the east coast, don’t even know him nor you & your family. But I have been very deeply touched by your obvious love for your special boy & your unending hope. Thank you for sharing the saga of Harley’s home coming.
As I sit here crying my eyes out in happiness for his return,I do wish I hadn't read your good news in my office! Of course, wouldn't you know it, the President of my company calls to discuss some frivolous business matter while I am sniffling with joy! I have been known to say time & time again;it never ceases to amaze me the impact these wonderful, beautiful souls in fur coats can have on the human condition. Hugs to Harley and the rest of your furry crew. Be ever watchful...but most of all revel in the blessings & joys of the reunion!

We aren't sure where he had been or what had happened because he was starving and walking funny but he is improving. :) Two happy endings!! :) I wish that man hadn't gotten a dime though. :(

Oh my gosh I'm am brought to tears just from the title of your post! Praise God you have him back safely at home! I can imagine how you and your family must've felt all these months. Our precious dogs got out while my husband was working in the yard. We didn't even realize it for an entire hour. We had neighbors helping us drive all around our neighborhood. I was practically hysterical. My Husband decided to take a chance and search for them across a major intersection and way down past it, they were each trapped in two different fenced areas of schools across the street from each other! I don't know who was happier, us or our dogs. As awful as we felt during those few hours, I can empathize with you and feel your joy as I read your story. So elated for you and your family and Harley!

I follow your blog for your amazing style and creativity that inspires me. The fact that you love big labs was a nice addition. Until I read this post. I have a face wet with tears, my nose is running, and my hands are trembling a bit. I have a Golden Retriever , Lincoln, my Linkie-Poo. He is my empty nest dog. Our second dog Golden. He is a big over-sized galoot and the third child I did not actually give birth to. I understand the love these creatures intwine in our hearts. Thank you for sharing your miraculous story! I am over-joyed for your family and for Harley. He must feel such relief as he settles back into his true home. Blessings, Barb

It's crazy - I don't even know you or your dog or live anywhere near you but I am so excited for your family! My husband had a similar story when he was a kid - a cat disappeared for about 8 or 9 months and then turned back up. Amazing. Praise the Lord!

The Herlings said...

I can't believe it! That is so wonderful, I regularly was checking-in on your blog to see if he had been found and I am all teared up as I CANNOT BELIEVE it. Things like this never happen and I am sure it was tough on the kids an you guys not knowing and not being able to say good-bye; even if it was time. Everyone needs closure and you guys didn't have that and now you don't have too. Yes, if Harley could talk, what would he say? What the heck happened out there over nine months?! Did his guilty conscious get the best of him? Happy blessings to all of you and glad to hear the dogs are starting to adjust as well!

Awww Melanie ... I have a fur baby named Buddy and I am in tears for you, your family and Harley !!!! If our dog Buddy ever went missing, my heart would just break in two. You must have just been beside yourself girl !!! Good on you for not giving up. This guy who had Harley has some SERIOUS attitude. Glad you took backup with you to get Harley. My heart is joyous that Harley is back where he belongs, adjusting and eating. Here in Calgary, Alberta, the cops would have followed up on the guy who had Harley and done their work behind the scenes to have the guy blacklisted from EVER owning or caring for an animal again and reading him the riot act. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when that happened, and it probably did. No one with a heart would let what he did to you guys and Harley go. I have a lot of friends who are cops and they NEVER would turn away from finding out everything about this guy and having a talk with him. Be blessed hunny :-)

You don't know me but I feel I know you. I've loved reading your blog but when I read about your dog's disappearance I cried for you. We have only recently welcomed a furry friend into our home and I can't imagine how we would feel if he went missing. Every time I looked over to your blog I wondered if this post would ever come - I can't believe that it has. I'm so so happy for you and your family. x

I know it sounds pathetic but I think all of us that have lost a pet to disappearance were living vicariously through your family's journey. So thrilled with you happy ending. Hope he adjusts back to himself quickly and completely.

Miracle indeed, oh my gosh!! I'm so happy Harley has come home (I've been meaning to leave a comment since your IG'd about his return)!!

We had to say goodbye to our 11 yr old gentle giant Hiro a couple years ago (liver cancer) & I still miss him every day. I can't fathom why someone would mistreat another soul, especially a furry friend. I'm just so relieved & overjoyed that Harley is back with people who love him.

Much love to you all!

OMG!! This is certainly a shocking and a genuine Testimony i have ever
seen..I visited a forum here on the internet on the 20TH OF JUNE 2014,
after my husband separated me and my marriage of 8 years was broken down
and i was totally inconsolable and without hope because i have tried all
means to get my husband back after much pleading and did everything
possible to make sure that he comes back, but nothing worked out for me....
And i saw a marvelous testimony with this email adress
ehiaghespelltemple@gmail.com of this powerful and great spell caster called
Dr ehiaghe on the forum.. And i saw how Dr ehiaghe reunited a family and
brought the Husband of a woman back to her in just 24 hours..I never
believed it, because i never heard nor learnt anything about magic before..
Not a soul would have been able to influence me about magical spells, not
until Dr ehiaghe did it for me and restored my marriage of 8 years back to me
and brought my spouse back to me in the same 24 hours just as i read on the
internet..i was truly astonished and shocked when my husband came to my
house and knelt down begging for forgiveness and for me to accept him
back.. I am really short of expressions, and i don't know how much to
convey my appreciation to you Dr ehiaghe.. you are certainly a God sent to me
and my entire life and family.. he did his work just as he guaranteed me in
24 hours and it yielded an optimistic result to me and i was able to get my
Husband back. right now my Husband has falling so much in love with me and
my kids like never before. This spell casting isn't brain washing but he
opened up his eyes to see how much i love and wanted him, i really don't
know how best to be grateful to you Dr ehiaghe for bringing happiness into
my life and family, and now i am a joyful woman once again.. here is his
