~a farmhouse bedroom makeover w/chalk paint~

This was a fun little weekend project I just wrapped up.
What is it about farmhouse bedrooms that are so cozy?
This home belongs to our friends, and neighbors that live directly across the street from us.
They were heading out of town for the weekend and the husbands mom secretly arranged for me to go in and paint their bedroom furniture while they were away as a little surprise.

A little background on their home.
It is a log home, one of the first houses built on Crystal Lake in the 1940's.
The homeowners have lived there about 6 years.
Recently, they just had all the walls inside painted white
{Sherwin Williams Alabaster}
and all the electrical redone. They have had can lights added where there was no ceiling light before.
The outcome is very bright and much more updated.

So, I was hired to paint all their furniture to unify the mix match look.
They wanted a white distressed look so I chose Chalk Paint by  Annie Sloan Pure White.

Here are a few before pictures shot with my phone.

It's a very cozy cottage style bedroom on the third story of their home, so you feel like you are in the trees. Like many older homes, it has angled ceilings, which I think add so much character.
And who wouldn't love a fireplace in their bedroom?
So romantic!

After painting, distressing, and waxing all the furniture I decided to give them a little surprise myself.
So I went to my favorite store, The Attic, which is literally my attic and got some goodies out to give the room some personality.

On Saturday I spent 4 hours preparing and painting the furniture.
It took 3 coats of paint.
I let it dry overnight and went back on Sunday to distress and wax it.
That part took about 2 hours.
Then I spent the next 2 hours cleaning up, putting everything back in place and adding a few new accessories.

8 hours is actually pretty quick for a full room makeover that includes painting 4 pieces of furniture!
I also knew the homeowners wanted their fireplace whitewashed eventually.
So I squeezed in a few extra minutes and used several coats of liming wax to lighten up the orange brick.

Are you ready to see the outcome?
Lets look at the fireplace area first.
Here is a little before and after:

The clock can be found here.
The artwork is from Minted and can be found here, framed using their barnwood frames.
I filled a little ironstone pitcher with wildflowers and added birch logs.

I had a piece of barnwood so I made a little coat rack just inside the door with a mix of new and old hooks.
It's perfect for bags, scarves, and jackets, but I decided to hang their wedding canvas on the hooks because it is just too sweet!

The dresser just proves how you can update old furniture with new hardware and a fresh coat of paint.

Before and after:

I chose black hardware to tie in the other black accents in the room and also to keep the piece from looking to "sweet"
The hardware came from our local hardware store.
You can find similar lanterns here.
They are battery operated candles on a timer which give the room a romantic feel.

I brought up the Ikea chair from downstairs and created a cozy little corner.

The bed side of the room before and after.
Both the bed and nightstands also got painted and distressed. I spray painted the knobs black to match the new hardware on the dresser.
I also switched out the lamps to add a bit more black to the space.
I really think black helps to ground all the white.
I made up their bed with their bedding but just swapping out a few pillows and adding a faux fur blanket I swiped off their couch.

In the corner I added a few letter "r's" which is what their last name starts with.
I found the husbands childhood guitar and placed it in the corner.
They previously had a bedskirt on the bed but with the new paint I left it off.

The faux stems add a bit of color to the little corner.

I always pick up random letters like these when I see them at thrift stores. I have a huge box of random letters in my studio, perfect for projects like this.

I used their old lamps shades on World Market lamps.

And now for just some random photos:

They were so excited and surprised when they got home!
So happy they loved everything.
Aren't surprises the best?

I love a good before and after and this one is fantastic! Especially because you used good old paint, elbow grease and shopped around the house...the best kind of makeover! Love it.

What a change paint makes!! You are always such an inspiration!! You were the first blogger I ever followed and still follow all these years later! :) (And I already cast my vote for you as well!!)
We recently, slowly, and long overdue, began our master bedroom makeover. We added shiplap on the wall behind our bed and my hubby built me a little "vanity" spot in a nook that was just wasted space. We painted the walls and I have been wanting to paint our pine furniture in leu of buying new. I am all about repurposing and revamping solid wood furniture! Thanks for this post that may just get me going on it sooner rather than later!!

Awesome! I think you should tackle that project!

This is amazing! I am always surprised as to how small changes can make an entire room feel completely different. Painting the furniture white not only made the space feel more modern, it gave the illusion of a larger space, and made it feel more comfortable. What a glorious surprise for the couple.
