make a giant HELLO welcome sign

HELLO!

Do you remember a while ago when I painted on an old desk top to look like a sign I saw at Pottery Barn? In case you missed it, you can see it here.

Well, when the weather got a bit cooler I decided I wanted to change up the art a bit, so I painted over it.

I went with something graphic in bold black and white which I think will be perfect for the fall season. Who knows, maybe I will paint over it for winter!

This project was super easy so I thought I'd share with you how I made it, in case you might want to make one too!

1- Since my sign was already painted, I sanded down the lettering so there would be no bumps. I wanted a smooth finish on this giant hello welcome sign, and sanding it did just that.

2- Then I painted the entire sign with a couple coats of white paint and let that dry overnight.

3- The next day I measured approx. 1/3 of the way over, and using a long level for a straight edge, drew a pencil line from that bottom line up to the far right corner.

4- Next I taped off that section using painters tape.

5- The letters I used are from the office supply store. Some home improvement centers have them, as well as Amazon. Cut out the individual letters that spell out hello. How cute would it be to do your address? That may be another project I share!

6- Using something like a ruler for spacing, apply the letters, pressing down firmly in place.
I found it easiest to start with the O and work my way backwards.

7- To ensure paint won't seep under the letters, I went over the top with a light coat of mod podge.
Let dry.

8- Paint over the letters and that entire section with a contrasting color. In this case I used black left over from painting our interior doors.

9- Let fully dry and then carefully peel off the letters using a sharp knife blade or razor blade edge.
I didn't get a picture of this. If anything bleeds through still, you can use a white sharpie or white paint and a fine paint brush to do touch ups.

10- Peel off the blue tape and you are done!

I love how massive it is, you cannot miss it when you walk up the stairs!

Have fun creating your own, and have fun with different words and colors too.
