how to age pottery with dirt

I have a quarantine project you can do while stuck at home!
Today I am going to show you how to age pottery with dirt. Yep, that's right, dirt!

Here is what you will need.

Rummage through your attic or storage space and see if you have a piece of pottery that is outdated. It can be a bowl, a vase, or a lamp. Get creative with this! {I can't wait to see what you do!}

Next you will need matte black spray paint. I happen to have a surplus of spray paint that I have saved from various projects over the years. If you don't have any, you can get it here.

Then the last thing you will need is your dirt.

Here is the vase that I am going to work on. I bought it months ago at a thrift shop because I liked the size and shape of it.

It appears someone else tried a little diy on this with the splatter paint.
Not the look I want at all. But for $7.99 I thought I would try this technique.

Alright, in a well ventilated area, {outdoors is best} spray your entire piece with the black spray paint. I did a couple coats on mine, then let dry. Remember, several thin coats is better than one thick one.

I did not get a picture of it after I sprayed it, sorry!

Here is the fun part.
You are going to want to rub damp dirt all over the entire piece, coating it really well. Get it into all the cracks and crevices.
Let dry.

After the mud has dried on it, take a rag and start gently wiping it off. You don't want to rub it all off, you'll want to get just the excess loose dirt off and leave the rest which is what gives it such a great patina. I actually used a whisk broom on some parts of mine.

Here is a picture I took with my phone after I rubbed the dirt away.

And here is a side by side for comparison.

Think about all the possibilities, and think about all the money you will save. I kind of want to do this to a ton more items in my house. It's so easy and I love the result! Trust me, I have paid a pretty penny in my lifetime for old pottery pieces that look almost the same to this! And if it ever breaks or something happens to it, I won't feel so bad.

If you try it, please post it to Instagram and tag me so I can see! {mysweetsavannah}
