I struggled with it for years and only really recently have I felt like I have it down.
For me, keeping the shelves uncluttered is huge. I wouldn't say I am a minimalist, but I also don't like a lot of stuff.
I tend to stick with a neutral color palette, so that I can add colors seasonally.
The transition between summer and fall is a slow one for me. I don't like to get much Halloween decor out until October, so September for me is all about adding in textures, richly scented candles, and warm fuzzy blankets.
I am joining a bunch of friends today to show you how we style our mantles or shelves for the season.
At the end of this post you can click on those links to see everyones homes.
Our mantle doesn't have much room for decor, so I typically leave it blank, except at Christmas.
What I do like to style is the shelves that flank our fireplace.
This year I filled a basket and a bowl with birch logs. We have several birch trees on our property and I just love the look and color of them.
These are purely decorative as we have a gas fireplace.
The wood bead garland adds even more texture.
A single pumpkin that almost blends in is all that is needed right now.
One other quick update I recently did was to swap out the faux logs in our fireplace for these
fire spheres. It's a modern take on the logs and I feel like it goes so much better with our style. I used 2 boxes to create this look and I had a few left over which I used outdoors on our fire table. Bonus-they are 1/2 off right now!
I hope you enjoyed this little peek into our early fall living room with some fun shelf styling.
